Engaging with Our Culture as a Christian

Dr. Cy Smith

A Call for Christian Advocacy and Leadership

What is happening in our society?  Perhaps, something really good!  For so long, we’ve been led by politicians and government education down a path that does not include God and a biblical perspective.  Things seem to be changing.  Certainly, in our neighborhoods, more and more students are being exposed to a Christian education, but also in State and National Government.  What is the reason for this, and can we trust it?

In the most recent episode of the Clearly Christian Podcast, Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School talks with Aaron Baer, President of the Center for Christian Virtue (CCV), to discuss how Christians can engage with culture, influence public policy, and stand firm in their biblical convictions. Together, they explore how Christians can play a vital role in shaping society and why this engagement is necessary for advancing God's kingdom.

The Importance of Engaging Culture, Not Avoiding It

Dr. Smith sees a shift in the cultural landscape, and that’s where this episode begins. He references the rise of Bible sales, though other book sales are flat, and public professions of faith by high-profile athletes and figures like Richard Dawkins and Elon Musk, even President Donald Trump, who have recognized Christianity's role in Western civilization.  He reminds listeners that Christianity is meant to penetrate every aspect of society and that this new public approach is a welcome change.  “Faith and religion have become private matters, and that’s a problem”.

Aaron Baer echoes this call to engagement: “The last thing we can do as Christians is avoid the culture or retreat in fear,” he states. He emphasizes that Christians must be active participants in shaping culture, not passive observers. Baer believes that public policy is a crucial avenue for this, especially in his role at CCV, where he advocates for Christian values at the state level.

Some notes to consider on the Chalkboard:

Chalkboard Point #1: You Were Saved for a Purpose

God is setting up His Kingdom and we are called to be a part of what He is doing. It’s our job to fix what sin has broken and redeem the culture back to God’s design for human flourishing…and the only way we will do that is by active engagement, not avoidance or retreat.

Shaping Policy at the State Level

Aaron Baer explains how CCV operates at the state level, particularly in Ohio, where they have successfully pushed for legislation reflecting biblical values. He shares an example of how Ohio has become a leader in conservative Christian lobbying, specifically citing their work in ending transgender procedures on minors and protecting girls' sports. “Christians can have a real impact on policy,” Baer says, “…and we’ve proven it here in Ohio.”

Dr. Smith praises CCV’s efforts, noting that Ohio has become a beacon for other states trying to navigate similar challenges. He encourages other Christian leaders to follow CCV’s example, advocating for biblical values at the local and state levels.

We can’t separate Christianity from our lives, and that includes our political lives.  These political changes are on purpose, which is another point to consider in your notes.

Chalkboard Point #2: This Cultural Moment is Part of God's Story

From the very outset of creation to today, all of this has been unfolding according to His plan. He created us, redeemed us, and will restore us when He is ready. This life is not all about us, it’s about where we fit into God’s greater story, and the sooner we get there, the more hope, joy, and meaning our lives will have.

Strengthening Christian Education

A central theme of the discussion is the role of Christian education in shaping the next generation. Baer echoes Dr. Smith’s long-held belief that education is foundational to transforming society. “If we really want to change the direction of our country, we need to disciple and educate the next generation,” Baer explains. He mentions the success of the Ohio Christian Education Network (OCEN) in planting new Christian schools and empowering parents with school choice.

Family and Marriage: Central to the Cultural Battle

Baer also touches on the importance of strengthening families and marriage, citing the work of Ohio Senator JD Vance in promoting family-centered policies. He explains that many of society’s issues stem from the breakdown of the family unit. “If we don’t address the collapse of marriage and family, we won’t be able to fix the bigger issues in our society,” Baer asserts.

Dr. Smith points out that issues like abortion, poverty, and crime are often tied to the breakdown of the family. He encourages Christians to support policies that promote strong families and biblical values.

This is a fascinating discussion, that pulls no punches when talking about the current state of our society and what needs to happen to turn things around.  Dr. Cy Smith and Aaron Baer remind Christians of the importance of engaging with culture, advocating for biblical values, and investing in the next generation through education.

As Aaron Baer bluntly states “We are called to be salt and light, not to retreat in fear, but to influence the world for Christ.”
